How to Prevent Dry Skin

Dry skin is extremely common and can be a real nuisance. It’s a problem that can come about for many different reasons, such as adverse weather conditions and underlying skin problems. In this blog, we will be sharing our top tips and tricks to help you prevent suffering from dry skin.

1. Moisturise your skin every day

Now it might seem quite obvious, but keeping your skin hydrated is essential to preventing dry skin. Dry skin is simply telling you that your skin is lacking in water, but you can fix this by using a moisturiser everyday to lock in the hydration. In fact, we recommend using a moisturiser in your morning and evening skincare routines. Most people who suffer from dry skin will also find it to be very sensitive, so it's important that you choose a gentle moisturiser that is formulated especially for dry skin. The best moisturisers usually include hyaluronic acid which works tirelessly to retain the moisture in the skin.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a crucial step of preventing dry skin. The process of exfoliation helps to get rid of your dead skin cells that are clogging up on the surface of your skin. This makes it easier for skincare products to get under the skin and work effectively, as well as facilitating cell turnover, which boosts the overall health of your skin.

3. Use Sunscreen

Just because the UK does not boast a huge amount of sun, it doesn’t mean you don’t need sunscreen. In fact, did you know that you are still at a great risk to get sunburned on a cloudy day? Wearing sunscreen with a high SPF everyday has lots of benefits including the defence against wrinkles and dryness. Skin that's exposed to lots of sun will become dry and dehydrated, which is why we recommend applying an SPF everyday!

4.Use a gentle cleanser

Usually, the soaps that smell the nicest are often the worst for your skin because the fragrances usually come from adding harmful chemicals. These harsh detergents in soaps can cause dryness, irritation, and inflammation as they pull away the moisture from your skin. For this reason, we recommend finding a gentle cleanser that works on dry skin and does not irritate any sensitive areas. For best results always remember to use luke-warm water instead of hot, to cleanse your face.

5.Get Enough Sleep

We’re sure you’re delighted to hear this one, but it’s true! Sleep is crucially important for our overall health, skin included. During sleep, your skin restores its moisture balance, meaning it retains that glowing look and smooth feel, as opposed to the dry, dull, sleep-deprived skin. You won't notice a difference overnight, but consistently well-rested skin will be easily identifiable compared to its counterpart.  Another top tip is swapping your pillowcase for a silk one as they are proven to help your skin retain more moisture throughout the night.

Some other causes of dry skin can include psoriasis and eczema so it's always best to check with a doctor if the problem persists.
