8 Easy Ways to Maintain Young Looking Skin

Lets face it - ageing is inevitable.

But, there are plenty of ways that you can maintain a youthful appearance for even longer.

In fact, it’s not just your genes that make you age. We’ve put together 8 of our best tips that you can follow to keep your skin looking younger.

1. Avoid too much sun! (and wear a good SPF)

We all love bathing in the sun, don't we? I mean let's face it - I'm dreaming of a week in the sun right now. However, too much exposure to the sun can have a real negative effect on your skin's health. Did you know that damage from the sun’s UV light is responsible for around 90% of your skin’s ageing. These rays can cause your skin to have a dull appearance, increase the chance of wrinkles and an uneven skin tone.

You’re never going to be able to completely avoid the sun though, so that’s why it is crucial that you wear a good quality sunscreen when you are out and about. Find a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30, and make sure that it’s a broad spectrum sunscreen — meaning it helps block both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Drink lots of water

Hydration is key to younger looking skin. The recommended amount of water intake is around 8 glasses every day to keep your skin looking hydrated and radiant. If you are dehydrated, your skin feel the effects and start to look really dull and dry. By drinking enough water, your skin's tissue and cells will constantly be replenishing and will keep your skin looking young and healthy.

3. Get enough sleep

If you want a youthful appearance then you need to get some sleep. Yes, we are really telling you to sleep! During sleep, our bodies fix the damaged skin cells and ignite the growth of new ones. Our body also strengthens its defence mechanisms that fight back against damage from UV rays and from radical cells, both of these are contributing factors to ageing.

4. Exfoliate regularly

Dull skin can be the result of dead skin cells built up on the surface of your skin. This can leave your skin looking much older than you really are. Exfoliating has many benefits, and can help get rid of your dead skin cell buildup. If done regularly, your skin will start to look alot brighter, and feel much smoother contributing to a more youthful appearance.

5. Moisturise daily

Drinking water is the obvious solution for keeping your skin hydrated, but moisturising everyday can definitely help this process too. Keeping your skin hydrated means it will not only look alot better, but it will become stronger and more able to fight off any irritants.

The best moisturisers have two main components that help achieve that super soft and glowing feel: humectants and emollients. These help to attract water from the air to your skin which keeps it looking super hydrated and helps to strengthen your skin’s lipid barrier.

6. Eat more plants

There are endless benefits for a diet rich in plants. Fruit and vegetables provide us with key nutrients that help delay ageing and keep our bodies looking (and feeling) super youthful.

Fruits and vegetables also increase the level of phytonutrients you consume, which helps us ward off the damaging effects of free radicals found in the environment. You should be aiming to eat a balanced diet consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains.

7. Exercise regularly

Exercising daily is great for your overall health, but did you know it has many benefits for the skin too? When exercising, you increase the blood flow through the body, bringing oxygen and vital nutrients to the skin which makes for a more youthful appearance.

8. Have a good skincare routine

Have you heard of the saying, prevention is the best cure? In other words, it’s best to take good care of your skin to decrease the chances of skin problems in the future. Establishing a good skincare routine is a great way to keep on top of your skin and maintain a young looking glow. By using a gentle exfoliant and moisturiser, you will be able to keep your skin feeling hydrated and looking more radiant.
